The famous Pakistani cricketer of 1990s, who turned into politician in early 2001-02 is set to become Prime Minister of Pakistan after July 25 general elections. His party Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaff (PTI) -- literally means Pakistan Movement for Justice -- emerged as the major political party in the general election, which have been controversial and opposition political parties allege massively rigged elections.
For getting a simple majority in the lower house, National Assembly, Imran Khan and his party stalwarts have also lured the independents and some smaller political parties like Muttahida Quomi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan Muslim League (Q) to form a government at the centre.
Speaker and Deputy Speaker from the PTI were elected on August 15. The arch rival Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), whose head and a former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif is in jail these days along with his daughter Mariam Nawaz and her husband Captain (Retd.) Safdar on corruption charges, will sit at opposition benches along with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal and other major political parties.
Imran Khan's PTI is also going to form provincial governments in the major provinces of Pakistan, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and will be coalition partner in Balochistan. Only in Sindh PPP led by Bilwal Bhutto Zardari the only son of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, will form the government and PTI will sit in the opposition along with MQM and Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA). Provincial Chief Ministers will also be elected in the coming days and with this the transfer of power process will be completed.
This is third parliament, which has been elected after restoration of democracy in 2008. Two assemblies have completed their five-year terms, which is first in history of Pakistan. Most of time Military has ruled the country directly through Marial Laws or indirectly through puppet assemblies (as in 1962, 1985 & 2002).
