It wasn’t something that happened overnight but over half a century. Gradually, incrementally, we accepted that the ever-increasing control of our movement, our language and our thoughts was essential for our safety, as fabricated threats induced us to trade our rights for the illusion of security. Most failed to see the net closing around us and those who did were ridiculed and silenced.
Mandatory shots for the good of our health drugged us up, and medication in the water dumbed us down. People became confused, no longer responding to logic and reason, as truth became false, censorship was freedom, left became right and right was wrong.
With a basic income for everyone and all work done mechanically, skills and expertise were lost to us, and few knew any longer what it was to build or create, to read or write, to communicate other than verbally through their intelligent personal assistant. Carbon taxes on farming followed by extreme global cooling eventually moved all food production from the fields to the laboratory, and ultimately our dependence was total.
So it was that in the last years before the great reset, our once great race of scientists, artists and thinkers became solely consumers, entirely in thrall to the machines.

Well done, @deirdyweirdy. I agree with @ammonite. This seems like a summary of or a part of a much longer work! I think a lot of people today would see much truth in this Orwellian story, where it turns out the way to control the masses is to get them to agree willingly to the terms.
Cheers Jayna, I must say I see a lot of truth in it myself. I feel sometimes as if the whole world has been flipped on its head. Everything seems to be upside down.
I agree. And so do many many others. That is what gives me hope — that we can set things on a better course again, where the environment, fairness, respect for all, and a healthy global economy prevail.

I wish I could share your optimism but it seems to me that our freedom is being attacked from every angle and we're walking, heads down and phones in hand, into the cage being constructed around us. We're so divided by nonsense like left/right, Christian/Moslem that we're fighting each other instead of realising that if we don't hang together we'll all hang separately.
I do really believe it will be okay. It’s just really scary right now.
