The situation, as I was thoroughly informed, was that no overtime would be approved. It didn't matter that we were short staffed. It didn't matter that my manager couldn't run till. The rules were the rules.
Ten minutes from my fortieth hour I flashed my light. I made a quick announcement. To my surprise, Black Friday had all my coworkers too busy.
Five minutes away I shut down my lane and counted my drawer. I left the store with a shrug.
An hour and twenty phone calls later, I found out I could get overtime if I wanted.
I didn't.
