For the past year and a half, Ante Rebic has always been in the eye of the storm, due to his below-par performance during the last season. In 2021/22, the Croatian striker scored just three goals, two in the league and one in the Champions League, in just over 1,100 minutes on the pitch. Physical fitness was a problem last year for Rebic and things did not start well this year either. Ante, however, in the hope of finding continuity, is better capitalising on the minutes he spends on the pitch.
Like last year
It took just seven appearances and only 268 total minutes on the pitch for Ante Rebic to equal his score from last season. Last year, only one goal in the Champions League at Anfield against Liverpool and then one goal against Juve and another in Salerno. To these were added two assists, both scored in the first leg against Lazio on matchday three. Also this season, the number 12 started with a bang, scoring a brace in the first league game against Udinese. After back injuries kept him out for a month, Ante returned to Empoli and came on in the second half, immediately scoring his third league goal - which unlocked a complicated game - and serving the assist for Leao's third Rossoneri goal. Finally, last night, once again as a luxury substitute, Rebic packed a chocolate for Sandro Tonali: the number 8 only had to unwrap and put in the net a very heavy goal.
Spearhead, outside or in a game in progress: as long as he's there
The feeling is that, in this Milan side, Ante Rebic is a luxury reserve and he is proving it in these first two months of the season in which he has always been present when called upon. The performance that the Croatian is maintaining also proves that Ante cannot be the one seen, little, last season. Rebic is an experienced player for the A-league and, except for a year ago, has always guaranteed a good number of goals. This year, with all the competitions that Milan have to face, it is very useful to have a player like Ante who can at the same time: guarantee a different solution compared to Giroud and Origi as the only offensive terminal, offer rest on the left or even on the right for the external players, act as a weapon in the match in progress as he is doing very well in these first matches. Three qualities in one. Pioli knows this and hopes that Rebic can find the right physical continuity to help the team.
