4 Effective Ways To Communicate, Tolerate And Accept Each Others Differences

in #mindset8 years ago (edited)

Hey Guys, this is another blog post I have uploaded onto my website and thought I'd share it as the last one got so much love. Thank you everyone, your support meant so much to me.

So, it was announced that Donald Trump had won the election and he is to become President of the United States of America.

My social media was filled up by everyones’ thoughts, feelings and opinions.

It frustrated me reading a lot of the BS. All of a sudden everyone became a politician and had views on the election.

I wondered, how many of them have fully researched accusations from both parties and made their own minds up instead of leaving it to CNN.

No matter what, I don’t feel burning a effigy of Donald Trump is appropriate.

Anyway, this post isn’t about the US Presidency, it’s about respecting each other’s opinions, listening and communicating with each other and not calling each other names because they don’t agree with you.

Tolerance.

Tolerance – dictionary definition:“the ability or willingness to tolerate the existence of opinions or behaviour that one dislikes or disagrees with”

We all have had different life experiences, which has moulded us in one way or another. What makes you happy will not be the same for me. That’s just the way life is. The world would be a very boring place if we all agreed with the same thing. We are all gloriously different with unique gifts, talents and abilities.

I have 4 principles that I try and follow everyday.

  1. Conscious Speech. To me this is being mindful of the other. It’s not being so thoughtless, bulldozing your way through life like a bull in a china shop.
  2. Conscious Listening. Listening without intent. Giving the person in front of you 100% of your time.
  3. Purity of Heart. I find principle 3 + 4 very similar. If you have a pure intent then it is less likely that you will offend one and other.
  4. Compassionate Action. If someone behaves in a way you deem as unacceptable, don’t you ever just wonder why? Maybe they have learnt that behaving in such a manner will bring them attention and (in their world) this means they are important. (we all want to feel important in some way) So, instead of passing judgement, feel compassion for them.

Follow these principles and you can’t go wrong in life.

Communication.

Communication isn’t simply about talking. It’s about listening … Truly listening and not just waiting for a moment of silence so that you can begin talking and sharing what your opinion is. Sometimes your opinion doesn’t matter or isn’t needed. Simply listening to your friend/partner/spouse is simply enough.

Some of the best communicators in the world don’t necessarily say a lot of words but when they do it’s to the point and perfectly understandable. The people who tend to “waffle on” are actually saying very little despite the amount of worlds they are using.

Task:

Just for today, try conscious listening. Just sit and listen to whoever is right in front of you. Truly listen. What are they saying? What are they

saying? Most people want to be listened to and understood. Just give them the space to express the good and the bad. You don’t need to take on their emotion. Just offer them a safe space to express without fear of judgement.

Then review how you felt during this practice and if this is something you can start doing more often.
