I was mining Bitcoin in the red for about six months. I kept my rigs running all the way down to $300 a coin. Then I gave up and turned them off. Now that it's over $2700 and steady, I'm wishing I had kept them running for at least another year.

Mining in the red is typically a point in time consideration. Your computing power and electricity costs will be higher than the amount you earn for most cryptocurrencies. The value comes in when you HOLD that currency as an investment and it appreciates!

Mining in the red is a "gamble" or an "investment", depending on how you choose to look at it :)

Thanks for your post. What do you think about mining ether right now? After tirelessly searching for Radeon cards, I bought a 6x RX 470 mining set up for the purpose of mining ETH.. it should be running 130 MH/s or so. According to my numbers, it should pay itself off in < 3 months.
