Who am I?
My name is Jesse Gerard Meyer, and I have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego. My dissertation work involved development of methods to identify and quantify all the protein sequences in a biological sample. This is an open problem, but we're currently able to quantify about half (10,000) of the human proteins predicted from your genome (DNA) sequences.
Since graduating, I moved to Marin county to study the biology of aging at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. Specifically, I've been studying the molecular basis for the complications that arise from excess nutrient intake, such as high-fat diet and chronic sugary drinks.
My Steemit journey thus far:
I don't remember exactly how I found steemit, but I instantly fell in love with the idea. A platform that self-curates and uses a blockchain to record its content?! AMAZING! This is the most innovative blockchain technology I've seen in awhile.
Of course, Steemit isn't completely perfect (as evidenced by this contest), but I think there is a lot to learn from Steemit.
Thus far, I've experimenting with posting different content, and trying to find what works. I've had some very small initial posts that encouraged me, and then I spent much more effort making a post on academic authorship, which is an issue I feel strongly about and want to help fix. I've learned that the posts where my emotion shines through are consistently the best.
My goals on steemit:
First and foremost, my goal is to explore the platform, especially the strengths and weaknesses in its current state.
Next, I want to become part of the community and sub-communities, and contribute to developing those communities.
Third, I want to understand the actual mechanisms that drive the continuance of this community, and I want to use the eventual release of smart media tokens for my own science communication projects.
What value do I bring to the steemit community?
As a biochemist and a relatively early adopter of cryptocurrency technology (early 2013), I bring a special combination of ideas.
Why I deserve to win
I offer completely unique and genuine scientific perspectives.

So do you know about diet pop. I am currently confused as to what exactly the effect is on someone? says zero calories? what does it do to you?
Diet coke and diet pepsi are essentially zero calories. In very large doses they might make vision worse. Sweet things can also make people want more, and therefore might cause overeating.
