You are correct that the purpose of religion is good behavior, but the purpose of devotion is a healthy fear of God. It's amazing how quickly we drop our religion of good deeds when something we see as bigger comes along, like our comfort being threatened. Religion alone isn't powerful enough to be prioritized over other events, which is why so many places of worship shut down over the pandemic, the virus was feared more than God. If the motivation for doing good is devotion to God, then nothing can become a higher priority.
There is something good in everyone.
I would argue strongly against "it doesn't matter what religion" as I believe there is only one true path.
However I also believe everyone has their own choices to make and own life to live. I won't deny any person living the life of their choice as long as they follow a legal path
