I don't usually go for rant-posts and while I'm not sure this is going to be one, I do have something bugging me. I was scrolling through my Facebook feed – I know I shouldn't but I get dragged back somehow – and something caught my eye.
It was an article called 'When your gynecologist calls you kitten' and it had the face of an old doctor looking at ya quite suggestively.
About 3 million Polish women have had negative experiences at the gynecologist,
It boosted in the description and, out of curiosity, I clicked the link against my better judgment, only to find it was just a thinly disguised feminist attack on male gynecologists, also insinuating that all doctors who work in the public medical system are awful. It appears this magazine or whatever it is asked its readers how many women had negative experiences at their gyno. And it ended with the ever uplifting detail that
Male doctors were most likely to mistreat female patients, though it happened among women doctors too.
This is the part where I go excuse me, what the actual fuck?
First of all, it's misleading to ask readers how many have had a negative experience at their gynecologist. It's a very intimate moment and can be very stressful and while some doctors are indeed jerks, that doesn't define the large majority of them, as this so-called author seems to believe. Simply because you've had a bad experience doesn't mean you're a victim, alright? Hell, having a “bad experience” might not even be the doctor's fault. Many women are a mess when they go to the gyno at one point in their lives, at least, so not really the doctor's fault, is it?
Second, male doctors were most likely to mistreat female patients? So if I go to a guy I'm pretty sure to get shit and be abused?
Because he's a guy, right? But hey, we live in the world of equality and freedom, don't we? I'm not saying it's impossible to find a bad male doctor – I'm sure there are plenty. As are female doctors, for that matter. I've heard plenty of stories of unpleasant, cold female gynecologists who mocked their patients and were really rude. Do I assume that all female doctors are like that? No, I just know that some are good, some bad, pretty much like with anything. I'm not going to avoid female doctors for the rest of my life because someone else had a bad experience or even because I had a bad experience.
But that's the normal way to view things, the balanced way and we no longer live in a society based on balance and normal behavior. We live in a world governed by extremes, as the comment section of the post shows:
my god I would threaten with the police […] Why would you simply shrug that off as a “casual” stuff? It's disgusting and it shows how men in that country [Poland] can get away with – alarmingly – a lot of stuff.
Is it wrong for a man to be a gynecologist?
May I remind you we're talking about a gynecologist who called his patient 'kitten' in order to put her at ease? Not talking about gang-rape or burning some poor woman's face off. Just the word kitten – alarming, I know. And if you read through all these revolted comments, you'll notice people don't band together, people don't talk about things like rational adults, they just jump at each other's throats.
God forbid you should say you had an unpleasant experience with a female gynecologist. One woman did and the answer was
allow me to disagree.
How on Earth can you disagree with what the first woman said? Were you there? Then how can you possibly disagree? It doesn't matter if you have a good gynecologist. One doesn't define all, what the fuck don't these people understand?
But they don't understand, because they don't try to. They just want to have something to cry about, something to be anxious about on Facebook, that's always popular. So what if our society's going down the drain? So what if we'll end up killing one another over semantics? It gives us a fake sense of mattering, of having an important opinionated existence, and that sure is worth it.
And while I understand the need for validation that leads people to act like this, I can't help but wonder how? How can you be so dumb? In life, you have different experiences. That's what life is about, how can you refuse to judge the simplest, most obvious things for yourself?
Again and again, I see such people and I think we deserve what's coming to us. We make up all these stories about the apocalypse and how awful that humanity might die out...But it's not, we did this to ourselves. And in all those apocalypse movies where they're fighting for their lives and you kinda root for them...you do realize that if they managed to get themselves up on their feet, they'd fuck up Earth yet again, right? We don't learn, we're too stupid to learn.
Just look at us bickering about how awful and chauvinistic male doctors (professionals, who have trained for years and take no interest in your genitals whatsoever because they see dozens a week) are....
Thank you for reading,
Glad I read this near bedtime.
There's a story in there somewhere.
Come on subconscious, do yo thang!
Ah, I'd love to read more of your stories - you're really talented! :D Hope this gave you material ;)
Facebook sometimes seems like a group therapy session where everybody support and Comforts those in their Circle. It doesn't matter if they're speaking the truth and I imagine sometimes they know they're not speaking the truth, but they're just trying to support their friends. Maybe this is the modern religion where are we tell stories that might not be literally true just to feel good.
My random thoughts tangentially related to your topic of the day!
