The world seemingly flipped on its axis as it seeks a level of normality not seen for the past year as COVID-19 continues to travel and mutate. On the theme of everything flipped, Chinese tech firm Xiaomi are coming forward with yet another phone that iterates the modern flip form factor. I’ve talked about the flip phone and its current state of maturity in a market that is clearly targeted and most brands believe they have something extra to offer by pursuing this design that might become widely accessible in years to come. Current flip phones come with great premium and each generation seeks to rectify the problems. Having followed Samsung’s outings, the flip phone has survived and will continue its life in the mobile world for a little while yet with other companies joining in, even Apple.
Where things get hot, other companies are sure to follow. It’s an interesting phase because this formfactor is still seeing refinement across the board and any imitations without thought will fall hard flat. Earlier releases left much to be desired in terms of durability and it’s going to be a matter of realising value, quality and performance once more in this form factor that is not a candy bar.
Reports show new images of the upcoming Xiaomi foldable, supposedly on the subway. From initial impressions to me, it looks like a hefty unity. A true sense of phablet but the surrounding bezel seems bigger than I’d like. Perhaps further refinement is up ahead before a formal release but the presence of the foldable from many other companies shows that folding phones have a market that everyone wants to a piece of.
