Kenneth got up bright and early, which was quite unusual for him but it was just that kind of day and being old he did not explain himself to anyone.
Or so he thought, "Why are you up already?" Maggie asked as he tried to sneak out of bed, "Get back and cuddle you fool." She told Kenneth quite matter of factly.
"Nope, I have stuff to do, I am not a baby." Kenneth responds stepping rather quickly to the bathroom and shut the door. He waited for a moment and then it came.
"You what?" Maggie yelled back at him, and he burst out laughing then opened the door and stuck his tongue out before saying "Neener neener," and a moment later closed the door with a innocent pillow now sliding down it to the floor.
"Ok, I am off. See you around lunch time, " Kenneth leaned over Maggie and kissed her on the cheek knowing she won't move away no matter how angry she pretended to be.
It was just the rule, you leave the house then a kiss on the cheek and the ever important "I love you."
At the bedroom door Kenneth paused and looked back at Maggie watching him sternly. "You know I wonder if the cantaloupes are good this season?" He asks her but did not wait for the answer before rushing out.
Maggie quickly replaced her frown with a smile and turned to hug his pillow before falling happily asleep.
She knew very little would get him out of bed early but finding the best cantaloupe when the market opened was one of them.
It had become a tradition of sorts, not one with a date or season but when life felt a bit more heavy. They would have a cantaloupe day and renew their vigour for the future by recounting their past.
