Prickly Pears a seasonal fruit that in my part of the world ripen around the end of August beginning of September.
A really delicious and refreshing fruit to eat especially when someone peels a bunch and you find them ready to on a plate in the fridge to grab!!!
They are not the easiest of fruits to pick as they are covered in tiny needles not to mention the large one on the leaves.
My granddad would make a sort of a fork out of a long cane, slitting the end into three parts and stuffing a stone in the end of it to keep the three slats open, to use to grab the prickly pears from a distance.
You would have to be careful on a windy day as when picking the pears the tiny needles would fly and if you are not careful you would be covered in them and they are soooo annoying to pull out, as you can easily feel them it's seeing them that is the hard bit.
When I was a child seeing this fruit in the UK was pretty much unheard of, and I remember my gran bringing some over with her from Sardinia, so I took a few to school to show my friends…
It was a novelty for sure and one friend by the name of Pauls, though it was funny to pick one up and stick it on the end of her nose, until she realised that the tiny needles had stuck to her nose, I know I shouldn’t laugh but it was funny at the time!!!!
