While it is definitely easier to make money online today than ever before, there are a lot of modern-day snake oil salesman out there promising the moon and the stars when it comes to effortless passive income – and some of them are even promising to deliver this pipedream on a silver platter with just a 'small' investment of a few hundred dollars.

If they can create sites that so easily generate passive income why bother selling them to you? I know I wouldn't.
Newbies to the world of online marketing usually eat this kind of offer up, simply because it promises a turnkey and autopilot solution to making money on the internet fast.
But if you take a moment to pull yourself out of the greed gland overload that these kinds of marketers inject into their advertising and copy and think about the offer, you’ll realize pretty quickly that NO ONE in their right mind would sell guaranteed multi-thousand dollar a month passive incomes for just a few hundred dollars.
It just doesn’t make any sense!
Some folks are peddling pushbutton software that “autoblog” for you, handling all of the heavy lifting by pulling content from this source or that (usually less than legitimately) while guaranteeing that the checks are going to start pouring in any day now.
Unfortunately, those paydays never come – cannot come – because the system itself isn’t designed to actually do anything but separate newbies and fools from their hard earned money.
At the same time, it is possible to make quite a bit of money online, even in the often oversaturated affiliate marketing domain.
You have to be smart, strategic, and savvy about your search engine optimization approach (your income will be directly tied to your traffic generation abilities and conversion rates). But more importantly, you're going to need to find an x-factor.
Some random niche site that you put no effort into and expect people to just purchase things off of because it 'has an exact match domain' or uses techie sounding term that newcomers don't know matters or not.
Is Amazon.com bookstore.com? Is Google search.com?
Success online today – particularly with search engine optimization and online marketing – is going to require diligent effort, regular testing and tracking of results, and optimization across every aspect of your sales and marketing funnel.
You need to be paying close attention to your numbers (total traffic numbers, bounce rate, conversion rate, total customer value, front-end sales, backend sales, etc.) and working to improve them every single day if you’re ever going to be able to generate any kind of “passive” – really, it’s semi-passive – income on the net today.
Don’t get suckered into those deals, on too many webmaster forum sites to count, that seem too good to be true.

Yes, I believe that entirely. I think you just need to stick to the basics...good content, good site-design...and you mentioned ROI, so if you're selling a product...find a way to make it unique. Or if you're drop-shipping or reselling something...find an edge or a way that makes how you present the product differently.
Keep at it. If you need to, PPC converts very well and is a much faster way to profitability and brand exposure.
