The US government stepped in in 2008 just before everyone was saying the financial system was going over the edge, and the government took some actions to save sytem from total collapse. Many of the actions they took were illegal, undemocratic, and they used powers to enforce decisions that the government didn't really have but they bullied their way through it.
Did you hear many people complaining about how the "government saved the day?" Not many.
There were a few. Mostly from libertarian side of political spectrum who said the system should have been allowed to collapse in 2008. To wash away all the debris. And we could have started building over.
But George Bush didn't have the stones to let that happen. And Obama was more interested in trying to use the crisis to build a base for his planned socialist paradise.
