I bought bitcoin in 2012, at first to experiment with the few 'btc-exclusive' online markets, but quickly realized how holding BTC could be beneficial. I remember buying 2 coins, 1 for myself, 0.5 for my twin brother and best friend and .1 for each of my other siblings and parents [3 sister, 1 brother and a seperated moms and pops]
I had planned to split them into paper wallets at first, and to give them to everyone on christmas after a good few months of profit. Unfortunately between buying is when I lost my job and had a few other shitty and expensive events hold me back from financial independence.
Though it would have been worth well over $13,000 [usd] today*
Those two bitcoin I had held [and some of the profits from hedging/scalp trading btc doge and ltc] kept me off the streets well into 2014. Sometimes I'll think back on spending the coins, or on how much I could have given back to my family and I'll feel a wave of nauseous regret, but then I remember:
Crypto-Currency isn't just a phase or a singular investment event is the future of money**
