Fixing My Own Satellite TV

in #money4 years ago (edited)

Hey JessDIY’rs

Due to load shedding electronics tend to have a shorter lifespan on this side of the world! As you can imagine switching off the power and switching it on again from the grid all the time would create surges that destroy electronics.

If you do not have surge protection plugs or switch your plugs off during that time. If had to have the TV repaired which I hardly use anyway and my pS4 needed repairs because of it

Now the TV satellite decoder packed up and they don’t offer repairs so I had to get a nee one.

As is in Cape Town it was windy as shit and LOl I’m not that good with heights but It wasn’t too bad!

I was low key just worried if the ladder falls id be fucked since I didn’t have anyone to put it back for me so I’d be stuck on the roof.

The issue with the new one is that you need to replace the LNB on the dish so I had to haul my ass up on the roof and have it replaced and then Redo all the settings!

Took me about 3 hours to get everything going again but it’s all working just fine and saved a few bucks on calling out an installer and I learned something new in the process

Changes after lock down

It’s amazing how suddenly with all these lock downs and the idea of having people in your personal space or spending money on things you can do yourself has changed! If this was last year you can be sure I wouldn’t have bothered to do it myself!

But because We now have had these shelter in place orders and budgets are tighter as I spend more on BTC every month I figured might as well try to do things to cut costs not what it’s much but it all counts

If anyone needs their TV set up I am your guy open up a new revenue stream and convert that few Pennies into BTC!

Now to relax for the rest of the day and watch the Arsenal game once it comes on! Ah now to think about what to make for lunch

Have your say

What do you good people of HIVE think?

So have at it my Jessies! If you don't have something to comment, comment "I am a Jessie."

Due to load shedding I almost lost my Laptop in the past :( . On of the major issue in my country which is restricting many things! I hope gov of my country really gives a solid thought in this sector. While I probably watched TV probably a year back, this whole internet ruined some childhood memories of mine jk. Glad that everything working fine for you.

Apart from all these, during the lockdown I learned some extra curricular activities which I probably never would have tried it.

I had to get a new laptop charger and new battery too since you never know when the electricity decides it’s going to start cutting out

I hardly watch TV honestly it’s just for the occasional live sport other than that i can’t be bothered! I’d also much rather find new things to keep me busy

We people might need to shift to somewhere, where electricity will not be a concern lol

Awesome! A new skill, that's never bad hihi

Lol indeed, I was also curious if I could do it myself so I thought why not give it a shot

Good job fixing it mate👍

Thanks man, no harm in trying if you mess it up you can always call the pros

Learning to fix your own stuff is invaluable! It can save you a fortune you're right!

Probably very little risk of catching covid from a professional coming in to your home, they're obliged to take precautions!

Yeah, I agree, I think it's all about time like we think is it worth spending 3 hours or is sitting on my ass worth x amount of money, lol I think a lot of DIY will come out of this whole change after lockdown.

I'm not too worried about the professional bringing in COVID I mean that would be a disaster for them, I just think people are going to think twice about calling in people to do things they can do themselves

Obviously we're not all plumbers and stuff but I doubt it will be as frequent a call out for certain tasks as it used to be

There are some things I'm happy to have a go at - painting for example, I can do that, carpets on the other hand - I'll get the pros in every time! The later is too skilled.

I know people have been reluctant to call people out - it was very easy to get in an electrician, handyman, gas safety guy when I rented my house out recently. Hardly any wait at all, usually the best ones are booked up for at least a month.

You’ll never know if you can do it if you don’t try and if you like to figure things out it’s fun and there’s always YouTube to help you

The University of YouTube, sometimes I wonder how the teaching profession survives!
