What the paper doesn't tell you is that they are not very hardy and die at the drop of a hat. Under farming conditions they are very susceptible to disease.

That's good to know! I know that the eggs are very difficult to hatch, but didn't realize the older animals still had difficulties.
Plus, aren't they extraordinarily grumpy? My aunt tells the story of being chased by an ostrich... right into the arms of this guy who's now her ex (even grumpier than the ostrich, I guess!).
