Conspiracy theories aside, conglomeration is the natural course of action for most businesses and industries. Look at the number of food processors. They are all under the same umbrella mega corporation. The number of banks have been reducing since the beginning of 20th century and they are now engaging in total warfare with ever more destructive financial instruments.
It will only be a matter of time before the whole thing comes crumbling down with only one remain as victor. There is simply no other way.
I think it may be the trend, but it's gonna be difficult to actually end up with just one regulating body simply because of human factors. It has to be such a perfectly coordinated system that doesn't exist so far..
