Selection bias adds to the challenge of accurately defining what "rich people did" to become rich. That said, there are some interesting correlations between what some call a "poverty mindset" and not having money. Also, there may be some connection to the strength of loss aversion. Makes sense if you're afraid of dying, you'll avoid risks. Many rich people don't mind risks because they take a lot of them over time and on a calculated average they come ahead. Some have no wiggle room at all to take those risks.
