You're quite right to describe money as something that enables people to create value. It's a tool of exchange. When people treat it as an end in itself that's a problem, but people demonizing it is also a problem. If you're pursuing it because it's a means to pursue things of value in your life, that, in my opinion, is a good, moral and virtuous thing.
The aspiration is seen as negative because we live in a culture based on self-sacrifice, which is a concept that helps nobody in the long run. You're hitting on the idea of rational self-interest. It's perfectly possible to have these aspirations and do good with them. In fact I'd say that you need to be self-interested to make a real positive impact on the world.
