Is NCS coin conservation a waste of time? Does NGC and NCS actually deliver?

What can you do if your coin is scuffed and blemished and generally nasty?

Perhaps you have a gold coin with red copper spots or a silver coin with haze or white spots? Can anything be done? Well sometimes the answer is yes it can. Gold is easier to conserve than silver and if a silver coin is spotted often little can be done.
Should you try to clean a coin at home? The answer is a most definate No!! Cleaning and conservation should be left to experts and doing it badly can devalue and ruin most coins.

In this example my 1937 half sovereign - a British Gold Coin - was spotted with red marks so I sent it to NCS (Numismatic Conservation Service) a branch of NGC the coin grading people.
Here is what happened and you can see for yourself the results.
