An Old $5 Australian Note

Recently I have caught a bug for collecting some of Australia's old decimal currency. Next on my list was to get my hands on an original $5 Australian note. Issued in 1967 with the introduction of decimal currency in Australia, this banknote features Sir Joseph Banks on one side and Caroline Chisholm on the other. My particular specimen is from the last mint in 1991 before the new polymer note was introduced in 1992.

In 1992 the paper note was replaced by a polymer note which was longer lasting and had better security features:

And then in 2016, the note was updated again with better security features to combat counterfeiting:

Cool old Notes

I kinda like old bank notes, when Canada was getting rid of the $1 bill then the $2 bill, I kept a few of each from my wallet that were a bit better condition. And I have a Zimbabwe $100 Trillion dollar bill, lol. It's pretty cool.

What I can't get over, always makes me think about a global currency reset, is how similar the bank notes are getting. The 5Pound, Canadian $5, Australian $5. And several more! All very similar in appearance with the 5 being the most dominant and the same security features. It's almost like the "powers that be", whoever they are, are planning to some day come out with a new global or "Commonwealth" currency.

But I don't know, maybe they just all used the same designer!

Yeah or similar technology. They do look very similar though.

I actually don’t have one of these. eBay here I come!

i started collecting the new ones, then realised i need to collect the old ones(just phased out) but i can't remember if I did and they are somewhere lol.but i do remember when the new ones first came out there was a lot of issues with them not working properly in machines that take money.....surely sorted now.

I remember the outrage from when Caroline Chisholm was replaced by the Queen.

Oh the outrage!

I know mum has a few old paper notes, I’ll have to check out what she has. The latest polymer notes are so cool.

Great Post @scooter.

The new $5 bill comes after 10 years of research, trials and consultation with the cash handling industry and counterfeit experts.

The Reserve Bank's head said the reason for the new bill is to beat counterfeiters at their own game and the two dots on the new bill is to help those with impaired vision.

Yeah I agree. They do look very cool. Probably the best looking notes in the world actually.

Felicidades!!

Thank you for sharing

Wow, it's been ages since I've seen those. I'm amazed that they are in such good condition! Have they been in circulation, or are they mint new?

It's funny, the 1 and 2 dollar notes are the same colour as the 50 and 100 euro notes. I just have the instinctive reaction that they are worth alot!

Thats awesome, i havent seen one of those $1 and $2 notes since i was a kid in the 80s, the old $5 is cool as well. Im new to teamaustralia looking forward to connecting with other Steemians on here. Cheers

I've never seen Australian bills before, the size and color remind of Euro's a bit. Great share mate!
