Hi Greg all my posts are blocked on youtube so i will post my comments here from now on ...
The housing and land situation in Canada ...
90% of the land mass of Canada is held as Crown land here in BC its 95% leaving 5% for the people, of the 5% here that includes agricultural and industry, so its more like less than 1% of the landmass of Canada is available for the population to use as living area. As the housing crisis continues. And land values rise beyond a lifetime of labour to pay for a postage stamp size piece of land ...with more regulations bylaws and taxes than you can even keep track of, it boggles the mind why prices for land are so ridiculous ...
Canada is huge ........
Covering 9,984,670 km2 or 3,855,100 sq mi (land: 9,093,507 km2 or 3,511,023 sq mi; freshwater: 891,163 km2 or 344,080 sq mi), Canada is slightly less than three-fifths as large as Russia and slightly smaller than Europe. In total area, Canada is slightly larger than both the U.S. and China; however, Canada ranks fourth in land area .
And we cannot provide any land or a place for the homeless ....
At least 200,000 Canadians experience homelessness in any given year.
At least 150,000 Canadians a year use a homeless shelter at some point.
At least 30,000 Canadians are homeless on any given night.
At least 50,000 Canadians are part of the "hidden homeless" on any given night — staying with friends or relatives on a temporary basis as they have nowhere else to go.
There is no land or resource shortage for people to live on and build homes from...
Just Bank greed backed by government support. And enforced by the police...
This is beyond ones comprehension that a small piece of Canada cannot be used for our homeless and less fortunate ...
Criminal is the only word that comes to mind .....
From the sheer numbers you are propably right. However, from what I heard about Canada, the biggest part is land where nobody wants to live. Except for caribous and polar bears perhaps.
And even in the southern regions, its not enough to just provide empty land. People need jobs, infrastructure and all that. I wonder how many of the homeless (or people struggling with housing cost) in the cities are willing to move into the countryside.
On the other hand, I agree of course that the housing prices in the cities have gone totally mad. And the Vancouver region is among the worst in this from what I heard, due to speculation of foreign investors mainly.
But as Greg says, this market will correct - may be even in the near future. Then those investors will make huge losses, and the prices go back to a reasoble level again.
There is a lot of places everyone would love to live on the 90% of the unoccupied lands Its not all tundra lol
Beautiful rivers oceans forest everywhere ...yes the north is harsh but still quite beautiful... I know no one who would turn down any land anywhere.. People dont need jobs as there is few anyway ....if they have land and are self sufficent ....This thought you cannot survive without a job only exsists beacuse we have no land to live from ... And here you could be self sufficent ... And most I know would rather have that over a job any day .
And no I will never see this from a city point of view .I am a country boy..
We had a large Amish community in the area that I grew up in ... Now thats self sufficent ...Even a huge horse hitch at the back of the local Canadian Tire Store to this day..
Just to add a note to this I work with the disabled and the local homeless shelter from time to time and was given a call last night to help a homeless person move his stuff as the police where chasing them from the camp they setup in the bush ..... Its a sad sad situation here for way to many people ... And being homeless in Canada in the winter is not something I would advise anyone to try ....
Where in Canada do you live brian?

But have lived from one side to the other over the years ..was driving truck for a while so I have covered most of the country ...
