The Economic Policy Institute released figures that tracks the incomes of Americans and sorts it by state. The data, available in a report, shows that to be in the top 1% nationally, a family needs to earn at least $389,436 annually.
The average income of the top 1% is over 1150 thousand dollars while the average income of the other 99% is just under 46 thousand dollars per year.
The report details the 1% barrier for each state.
New Mexico is the state with the lowest figure, just over $231k, while Connecticut tops the list at just short of $670k.
The top 1% takes home 20% of all the income earned in the U.S.
Share of U.S income over time by the top 1%
Although the top 1% is earning 20% of the U.S. income today, that has not always been the case. In the 1970’s it was at its lowest point, dipping under 10%.
