On a particularly bright, early Spring day, my son and I were on route to some rural abandoned sites to photograph. Most of these places are simply abandoned, usually in favor of newer structures. This scene wasn't one of my objectives, but when I passed it, I had to turn around and photograph the site. The looming of the fireplace, so stark among the burned out remnants of the lost home in that bright sunlight, stood as a testament to the ephemera of that haven of hearth and home upon which we all rely for our sense of belonging and security.

For this entry for the #monomad challenge, I converted the image to black and white using the "noir" feature in my Apple Photos image editor.
