A Steamer on Coniston Water in Cumbria

in #monomad6 years ago (edited)

You can't always get what you want but if you try a little harder you may learn something in the process. To butcher the Rolling Stones great lyrics. It has relevence to todays post.

I took this photo of a steamer on Coniston Water in Cumbria and in my minds eye it looked great and reminiscent of the great classic moody and atmospheric paintings by J.M.W. Turner.

Below is the final cropped and edited image and how I saw it in my imagination. We will go in reverse order of how this was made. I pushed the image right to get the boat in the sweet spot of the frame using the rule of thirds. For those of you that do not know what the rule of thirds is. Check this

Steam launch on Coniston Water with a blue tint

Below you can see the image has a blue tint and the steamer is central with the horizon line below the centre of the image which is where I wanted it. The blue tint brought those mist covered hills behind the steamer into a bit more prominence.

Zoomed in 50% gives this view of the steamer. Not great detail but interesting.

The original photograph below is as it came out of the camera and after being converted from Canon RAW (CR2) to the Digital Negative (DNG) format before editing in Photoshop. I liked this photo and had high hopes for it being something really special.

So what did I learn?

I learned that; if you have not captured the photo in the camera, then you have not got the shot that you thought you had and no amount of tweaking with whatever software is going to change that.
Don't get me wrong. I do like this photograph and it is almost exactly as I wanted it but expected much more detail by using this RAW method. Maybe if I had used a long lens it may have been better but it's all good. I learned an important lesson. Don't assume anything when it comes to photography.

This photo below is from Wikimedia Commons and is of the painting. The Fighting Temeraire by J.M.W. Turner that inspired my thought process. A bit ambitious maybe delusional even? but hey! what are you gonna do if you don't try something hard?

Good explanation on what you are achieving.
must have been a great view.

It was so much better in real life and the final image is not a million miles from what I was after. I just wanted the steamer to be a bit more in focus but hey ho. It's all good.

Fabulous work =)

It's a lovely scene, I can absolutely appreciate what you were going for. Sometimes you just need that long lens to get closer to the scene as you see it in your mind... I think your best image is the third one in the post. Something in the processing is causing the halo around the branches in your first and second images.

Nice composition in the final cropped image. I think, however, I prefer the blue tinted version. :D
