I recently paid a visit to my friend Francine, who had been unjustly locked up in fungi jail for missing a few too many #FungiFriday posts. A harsh punishment, if you ask me.
Before all this happened, I tried to be a good friend and send some encouragement. HEY YOU! I know you’ve got a treasure trove of interesting photos or fertile grounds just waiting to be explored. It’s time to get moving—I’m watching and waiting…
Hunting and photographing fungi isn’t as easy as it looks. These sneaky little beings are everywhere—but well hidden. If you ever spot a group of us wandering through the woods, cameras in hand, don’t worry. We mean no harm. We just want to capture a great shot, and some of us even bring along a “makeup bag” to help them look their best. Mine usually contains a trusty stick to brush off leaves and debris. If I’m feeling generous, I might even offer them a sip from my water bottle.
A Visit to Fungi Jail
When I arrived, Francine was in the jail yard, stuck to a tree and looking a little down. Her cap had upturned slightly, catching whatever debris was drifting down that day. A few leaves and specks of dirt had settled in.
I noticed she was reaching out, her gills stretching through the metaphorical prison bars, searching for some connection. I get it—this place can wear on your emotions. But fear not, I was there to brighten her day. We spent an hour chatting about all sorts of things, and I kept the conversation lighthearted, avoiding any mention of the outside world.
Before I left, I snapped a couple more photos. Some might say they’re taken from an overly bold angle—showing off those gills in all their glory. I say, why not?
The Plan for Escape
Of course, I couldn’t leave without slipping Francine a message. A secret message. After all, I suspect certain prying eyes may be watching this post…
Here’s an unrelated website. No need to pay any attention to it. Move along.

Who knew a simple fungi photo could turn into a full-blown prison break story? But hey, if you’re going to get locked up in Fungi Jail, you might as well make it memorable.
