All Things Supplement during Pregnancy

in #motherhood7 years ago

When I started working out properly, I also started taking some supplements to help with recovery and to maintain my muscles. Nothing crazy, just Whey protein, BCAA's, Glutamine and Vitamins. I also really enjoyed drinking herbal tea to keep me from getting too bloated and feel energized (and hydrated).

Many supplements have not beed studied enough to be labeled as completely safe during pregnancy. So here I was again, researching... I started by reading up ingredients and ended up looking what female pro athletes took during their pregnancies.

I am not saying that they are approved for pregnant women but this is based on my personal experience with my first pregnancy and was cleared by my doctor. Avery is healthy, strong and alive to tell the tale, so here are the supplements I took - and still take - to supplement my healthy lifestyle:

  • GNC Pro Performance 100% Whey Protein - I like this one for after my workouts and use this while pregnant.

  • MRM Natural Whey - I used only this brand after pregnancy and throughout the entire nursing period of one year. It's free from any artificial sweeteners and flavors, and dissolves easily.

  • BCAA + Glutamine - I prefer the powdered version of this supplement over the pill form as I can drink it while working out. Again, MRM brand is all natural and while it does not taste as great as the ones from other brands, it gave me peace of mind.

  • Fish Oil - once to twice a day with meal while pregnant. Fish Oil provides omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which help support a healthy heart and brain development of the fetus.

  • Calcium/ Bone Care - I really like this combination of Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamins D3 & K from Puritan. During pregnancy, your body absorbs your calcium to build your baby's bones and teeth and also to help produce breast milk, so it's important to supplement with any calcium-rich foods or pills to avoid any kind of bone weakness or disease in the future.

  • Wheatgrass - If I was feeling low on energy and not sick, I would have a glass of wheatgrass. You can get the powdered version pretty much everywhere.

  • Collagen - I drink a glass of this collagen powder every morning, either mixed with fresh squeezed orange juice or plain water. I do this mainly to help the flexibility of my skin, especially during pregnancy when your belly is growing and skin is stretching big time, but also to prevent aging so fast. You can get this in pill form as well but I choose to get some extra hydration with the powder.

  • TeaMi tea blends - I love drinking tea and easily get bored from the regular ones. Also during pregnancy, you're meant to drink certain herbal teas in moderation or avoid completely. TeaMi loose teas are safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. They taste delicious and are are natural, although some contain caffeine. Use my code TANYASWAY5 to get 10% off your purchase!
