Hard Work Episode 2

Naturally, it is absurd to sow little and expect abundant harvest. In sports the same law operates. Athletes train continuously and vigorously for months before setting out to contest a particular race. They wake up at dawn when most people are asleep, go for jogging and subject their bodies to all sorts of training. A 100 meter runner for instance will run that distance countless number of times, in each attempt trying to improve upon the previous time. They do press-up, weight lifting and a host of other exercise just to be good form for the D-day. Eventually, the one who trains best normally wins. The law is as simple as that and is also the same in boxing. One has to punch bags countless number of times and learn all the tricks just to be super form to beat the opponent. Bob Hayes, a former 100-yard world record holder, was asked how he overcomes. Hear him: ''It blood, sweat and sometimes tears''. Laziness may appear attractive but hard work always gives the needed satisfaction.

American football legend, Joe Namath says, ''you learn you can do your best even when it is hard, even when you are tired and maybe hurting a little bit''. I have observed that most of the academic geniuses i have met embraced hard work as a friend. They learn like nobody's business. A friend described one of such people as '' he learn likes crazy''. They go that extra miles which many refuse to go. They do not stick just to their notes. They learn from other materials, wake up at dawn to read some more, and hence gain extra knowledge and extra ''trick'' of going about that problem which makes them extraordinary.

Alex is a good friend of mine who came out as the fourth best in the country during his time in the primary school final exams. He such a brilliant student so i decided to observe keenly what he did that i did not do. In the second year in the secondary school during our revision week, many of us drew our timetables, resolved to stick to them and work hard. At times we gave in to laziness and slept, sometimes chatting, watching movie and just wasting time. sometimes we would suddenly come to our senses and then pick up our books again. But this boy was different. He would depart from his room each day, go to the library and study until he finishes that target for the day even if it would send him to 10pm in the evening. He was just committed to hard work and in the end he had one of the finest grades among us. I then realized that he possessed this thing that most of us did not have: hard work.
