It’s an everyday question we ask ourselves or get asked by other people, what motivates you?
Maehr and Mayer in their book “Understanding Motivation and Schooling: Where We’ve Been, Where We Are, and Where We Need to Go” said Motivation is a word that is part of the popular culture as few other psychological concepts are. This definition is a bit complex even for myself, so I would say motivation is simply the reason or excuse people give for doing the things they do. The reason for this actions could be based on two factors which are Nature and Rationality of the individual. The nature of a person plays an important role to how the person is motivated, questions like drives, needs even desires are answered in this level while questions like how instrumental or meaningful is the project even self-identity is put into consideration when it comes to rationality of the same person.
Motivation as many Psychologist have come to agree is seen as a cycle in which thoughts affect behavior that is behavior influences performance while performance influences thoughts and the cycle continue. Each stage of the cycle consists of many attributes such as beliefs, attitude, intentions, communication, experiences a person has. It has been argued that motivation comes as a result of the participation or interaction with ones’ environment or people around (Extrinsic) rather than from self (Intrinsic).
To me motivation comes from SELF and you wonder why?
This kind of motivation is what prompts a person to start doing something (self-desire) that is the person is driven by interest or enjoyment of the task or project itself rather than relying on external pressures from other individuals or environment. We have all been in that situation where we thought we could not make it but we did and sometimes attribute this success to others but really it was our self-determination that got us through. Motivation and encouragement may sometime mean the same thing but in really sense it’s not, don’t get me wrong we need others but it all starts with us. Lets’ take a look at the difference between the two words Motivation and Encouragement
“Motivation relates to inspiration to start or increase the willingness to do work while Encouragement is the persuasion to continue something”
So lets’ start getting our game together coz no one can do that for YOU except YOU, the main key is to love what you do or want to do because that’s the best motivation you can ever get.
Remember it BEGINS with YOU and still ENDS with YOU.
Start that project today…
