Often clients are quick to tell me what they think they 'are'.
I'm a gambler, I'm a chocoholic, I'm a failure, I'm a hard gainer, I'm depressive and so on.
Often clients are quick to tell me what they think they 'are'.
I'm a gambler, I'm a chocoholic, I'm a failure, I'm a hard gainer, I'm depressive and so on.
They label themselves and believe they are one with their current beliefs.
''But actually they're struggling with specific issues.''
The gambler is struggling to stop gambling, the chocoholic is struggling reducing or stopping their indulgences with chocolate, the failure is struggling with obstacles and challenges and the depressive is struggling with depression.
Struggles, problems and challenges are issues we have and face but should not define our identity, it's not something we are.
''When we're struggling with anything we need to separate the problem from the person.''
This gives them the breathing space both mentally and emotionally to better deal with and move out of their current state and pass through the issues that they think are defining them.
''The greater distance we can put between the identity of the person and the problem the better.''
There are many techniques to handle this but its by no means a quick fix but this helps to rationally move forwards in overcoming issues.
So if you're struggling right now, don't let it define you, don't believe that's what you are.
You are only ever this one moment in time.
You are so much more than any issue or problem.
You are capable of so much more....why not define yourself in that way instead.
