It us very important to have the requisite will, the wish to do anything. If you do not dream of good things in life, you will never be able to perform them in the first attempt, though after a fair number of trials, you may succeed. The well-known fable of the thirsty crow is just an eye-opener for all of us. The crow was thirsty. He flew in search of water here and there. The basic thing is the thirst of the crow. Under the duress of the thirst he thought of a number of ways to quench it. His act of flying, gathering of pebbles and putting them into the pitcher are the means , but not the beginning and the end of the whole endeavour.
Here,we must remember that the will of the crow is paramount. His being thirsty is greatly important. Had he not been thirsty , he would not have taken the trouble of flying here and there and the question of gathering the pebbles would not have arisen at all. We have seen in the story that the way to quench thirst follows automatically. It is a natural outcome, a natural result of the will of the crow.
We, students, can learn a noble lesson from this simple story. Let us have the will to study . Let us awaken, arise and reach for the goal . Let us pre-determine the destination. Now to reach it, there will be many lanes and by-lanes, many paths will come into sight on their own. Your first and foremost job is kindling the fire. The rest would follow automatically. If i am sleeping, i can never reach the winning post. To cut the matter short, we should have the right amount of will, and th way will beckon us.
"Where there is a will, there is a way" ;that is, if you have really made up your mind to do something , however difficult it may be, and even apparently impossible, you will sooner or later find a way of accomplishing it. The emphasis is on the will to do it ; where there is a will, a way will be found.
It is this lack of will that accounts for failure in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred. Lack of will is of two degrees: First, though we say we want to do a certain thing, and persuade ourselves as well, in reality, we are not prepared to make the necessary sacrifices and face the hardship. So, to comfort ourselves for making no attempt, we tend to find excuses, and make mountains out of mole hills. "There is a lion in the way!" we cry . We exaggerate every difficulty, fill our minds with the obstacles in the way , and we persuade ourselves that attainment is impossible. The second kind of 'lack of will' is we actually want to do something, but will and level of commitment are weak; they are like a thin, feeble stream of water which is digressed or blocked by every small obstacle in its path. The "will" in the proverb is a strong determination, that will never take "NO" for an answer, and that perseveres in spite of failure, still undadnted. It is a will like a rushing torrent that sweeps rocks and banks and trees out of its way, and cuts the mountains to reach its destination. A fierce desire, a strong determination, that will make light of difficulties, this is the sort of will that finds the way to achievement.
This is the spirit that cries_
"Then welcome each rebuff
That turns earth's smoothness rough,
Each sting that bids nor sand, but go!
Be our joys three parts pain!
Strive, and hold cheap the strain
Learn, not account the pang; dare, never grudge the throe!"
Many men who became famous as scholars, artists or entrepreneurs beat insuperable obstacles to win success. It was their undaunted will to succeed that in the end found the way to success. Napoleon said the word " impossible" is not found in his dictionary. There is a story of Pallissy, the French potter. He made up his mind to discover a pure white glaze for china. He was a poor man, and had but little education; but for twenty years he worked at his task, trying hundreds of experiments and failing in all. His wife and neighbours called him a lunatic, for he ruined himself by his effort. But in the end he succeeded, and became a famous man. He had the will and he found the way. So let your motto be, Never Despair!'
