It is worth celebrating workers day in Nigeria. International workers day is celebrated commonly may 1, same as Nigeria. It's a day dedicated to celebrating the efforts of workers, past and present, that have helped provide the social, political and economic backbone of this country. However, Labor Day is one of those holidays that you reap the benefits from but that many people don't actually know the true significance of. People don't even know the importance and significance of this historical celebration, even the so called workers and their unions.
Why will we be celebrating workers day when the workers themselves are suffering from bad welfarism, poor salaries and bonuses. In different sectors and states in the country, there is poor salary scale and bonuses, irregular payments of salaries, neglect of workers welfares and poor governance and management toward workers.
Then what are they celebrating?
According to Encyclopedia of Chicago, the trial and conviction of the 8 Labour Union leaders is still considered as one of the worst miscarriages of justice in American Inspired by the American movement for a shorter work day, Labour Unions all over the world began celebrating May 1st as an International workers’ holiday and the Hay market tragedy is still remembered throughout the world and is marked as Labour Day.
The story of workers demanding for their rights is not alien to the employees of the Nigerian government, The Nigerian civil servants have over the years been playing important roles in ensuring that government policies result in tangible services for Nigerians and the various Labour unions under the two major umbrella bodies of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have demonstrated maximum tenacity in demanding for the rights of Nigerian workers and whenever negotiations fail, peaceful demonstrations, protests and strikes had always been inevitable.
During the era of military regime, when there were worst confrontations and face off with the military governments which led to the dissolution of the body on two occasions, it never deterred the Labour unions from seeking a better welfare package from the government.
Nigerians and the various Labour unions under the two major umbrella bodies of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have demonstrated maximum tenacity in demanding for the rights of Nigerian workers and whenever negotiations fail, peaceful demonstrations, protests and strikes had always been inevitable, these are till injustices by the Nigeria government . Billions of Naira are mismanage and diverted intended for workers.
unending pains and struggles of our leaders has caused the great workers of this Nation by depriving them of there entitlement and not remorseful
Nigeria workers are suffering, indirectly affecting all Nigeria.
Politicians are smiling due to their corrupted attitude. What a country!
What is the solution?
Most importantly i want to say Happy Workers' day to Lautech Workers!!!!!!
