First, let's get to the basics, what is self esteem ?
Self esteem is how you SEE yourself, how much faith you have in yourself and consequently, how you treat yourself and how you feel about yourself. Self esteem (or lack thereof) starts developing when you were only 2-3 years of age. Surprising, isn't it?! How can our brain interpret self esteem (which, by the way, is a rather complex concept) at such a tender age? Let me try to tell you how, Self esteem starts plummeting when we (a baby) see an adult reach the top of the shelf and pull out a cookie jar, but we notice that we cannot do the same, at that age, our minds are so underdeveloped that it cannot rationalize whatever it just witnessed. It only registered the part when we could not pull out the cookie jar.
Hence, our faith in our abilities is lost. Faith can increase also, when we achieve the desired goal thereby increasing our self esteem.
However, as we grow older, our brain starts interpreting and rationalizing things and these issues do not affect our self esteem anymore.
This is only one of the many examples. However, if you correlate that little example with the everyday life, you can connect the dots and see how self esteem plummets/rises.
For example ( I am a student, so I'll take a related example) I have decided that I will complete 2-3 chapters today in the pre-decided time slot, but if I am not able to do that and this happens on a continuous basis, then my self esteem, i.e. faith in myself will erode and this is dangerous because this is when life starts to seem to be out of control.
We as humans, need some form of re-assurance that things are under our control and whatever is happening, is happening for our own good. This gives rise to the concept of "hope" (but that's for another post).
Similarly, when you set goals for yourself and consistently fail to achieve them, whatever be the reason, your self esteem starts spiraling downwards and might also lead to anxiety, depression, etc.
In my humble opinion, the only cure to fix low self esteem is to DAZZLE yourself by taking massive action. It might seem daunting at first, but once you become an action taker, your self esteem sky rockets and you feel like the king of the world
and most importantly, IN CONTROL of your life, because you know it in your heart, that you are there for you, your confidence will shine through, and you'll literally exude those vibes!
So now that you know whats stopping you from being confident, will you take action to reverse it and take charge of your life?
