Consistency Over Talent

in #motivation3 days ago

I have heard a lot of people say that talent is the most important factor towards the achievement of success, but what they fail to understand is the place of consistency. It is true that talent can give you an initial advantage, but to be sustained, then you need consistency; that is, putting in efforts to constantly improve yourself. If you depend solely on what you were born with, you will be limited in life. A lot of people who have achieved success did not even come from a place of privileges, but they kept putting in efforts consistently, and it turned to them for success.

A student may be born naturally brilliant, but without reading and studying their books, there will be a limit to their natural brilliance. In fact, someone who was not born that brilliant but who has committed their life to extensive studying will perform better than them. Talent is to give you a platform where hard work is to be built, but it should not replace hard work and consistency. Just to let you know, history is filled with naturally brilliant and talented individuals who did not live up to par with their abilities nor achieved greatness, simply because they depended entirely on their natural talent without adding any consistent work to it. It is when you have put in consistent work to your talent that you will achieve greatness.

There is a very talented footballer who I admire so much. This is not because of his abilities, nor because of how many Ballon D'ors he has won, but because of the level of consistency, dedication, determination, and hard work his has put in over time. It was revealed that on the days of training, he would arrive well before everyone else, kept training, and would still remain even after everyone else had gone. It became his normal routine and he stuck with it. There was a particular style of freekick that he normally plays, which became like his signature kick. It was revealed that he practised it so many times before he mastered it. This shows the power that is generated from consistency. If he had relied only on his natural talent, he would have been very limited.

Just to let you know; whatever talent you think you have, a lot of others have even bigger talents. What will give you an edge is your consistent work. When you practise something regularly over a considerable period of time, then you will naturally become perfect in it. Remember when you started to drive, probably a manual gear, it seemed like a difficult task. But as you kept learning and practising, what seemed difficult at the initial stage started becoming easier and at this point, it might even be considered as a conditioned reflex - because you have mastered the act of driving. Consistency is a very big determinant of success. You cannot do something just once and expect to gain mastery over it; you need to do it repeatedly over time.

You may wonder why consistency matters more; let us take a look at it. Firstly, consistency builds discipline. When you are committed to practising a skill daily, it will not only lead you to forming it as a habit, but it will also help you to build the required discipline in life. If you see bodybuilders for example, you will appreciate their level of discipline to go through the tough training processes. In addition to developing discipline, consistency also helps one to develop and master their skills. There is no skill that you would want to have today that will come automatically, but through consistent practising and learning. You may not even get it at the first attempt, but you need to keep trying and be consistent.

In order to build and develop consistency, there are things that can help you. The first one relates to how you set your dreams. Do not go setting impossible or very outrageous goals and expect to be consistent. In fact, you may even be discouraged. So take your dreams in little bits. Another tip that can help you build consistency is to create a routine and track your progress. Each day, you should have a lineup of what you need to do and make plans to do it. Then keep track of the activities that you have performed. When you keep doing this, it will help you to build consistency. You also need to grow in patience because these things do not come easily and they are not automatic, rather they are systematic.
