A few weeks back, I went to an office to visit a friend and also undertake a transaction. At the door of his office, there was a particular quote that was pasted there, which caught my attention. It said "the best version of yourself is not a destination, rather it is a journey which begins now." Over the years, I have come to realise that there is always room to make improvements and the best version of anyone is not what they arrived as a destination, but a conscious effort to keep getting better by the day. Committing to daily personal growth is a way to becoming a better version of yourself. The idea is to be better today than you were yesterday.

The first step towards becoming a better version of yourself is to recognise who you are. Self-awareness is what makes you to know who you are - your strengths, weaknesses, purpose in life, and your passion. If you do not know who you are, then you may not know what you are built for. You have to know where you are at the moment before you will know where you can get to. That is; a journey towards a destination has to begin from a starting point. Direction is almost impossible without a knowledge of your starting point. So to grow and become a better human, you have to first know who you are. You have the responsibility of self-discovery. A friend would normally say; "if you have not discovered yourself and do not know who you are, someone else may tell you who you are not."
The next factor that helps you to become a better version of yourself is your decision to be better. The truth is that you cannot help someone beyond where they want to be helped. Neither can you go beyond the level you have decided to. It is your decision to grow that will make you to plan and take actions towards growing. There is almost nothing as strong as having a decision to effect a change. Any achievement you see now once began as a decision. If you have decided within yourself to become better, then you are already on the pathway of achieving it. It is worthy to note that a lot of the things that people experience in life is a function of the decisions that they have made. This is also reflected in their choices; choice of actions, of inactions, of friendship, of career, etc. Just like it is constantly said that "your choices (or decisions) are what make you who you are."

The next point is to have a goal of how to improve on yourself and what to achieve, with a time frame attached to it. For example; as a student, you may have a goal to be studying at least 3 chapters of your textbook each day. This is what will give you the compass on the direction to go. It is your goal that actually prompts you to take actions and to achieve your desired result. If you do not have something to achieve, then there will be no zeal to even take action in the first place. More so, even if you take any action, you will not know if you are on the right track or if you are actually making progress. This is why having a goal is a very essential and fundamental requirement towards becoming a better version of yourself.
Another very important point is, do not settle for good. It is true that you may have seen a couple of successes in your endeavours, but do not allow it to become a bane for you by settling for it. If you do not improve on what you think is a success today, a time may come in the future when it will lose relevance or even become a failure. This is why, if you have achieved something good, do not just relax, but keep striving to improve on it. It does not mean that you should not celebrate your wins, neither does it mean that you should not be satisfied with what you have achieved, rather it means that you can get better. This reminds me of what my friend normally says; "good is good, but better is still better."
