Life will not hand greatness over to you on a platter of good. More often than not, it comes as a result of taking some daring actions and making some bold and risky decisions. You have to understand that there is no way you can achieve greatness if you are not bold enough to take daring steps, which may be risky at all fronts. Everyone you see now as being successful had, at one point or the other, taken some very bold and daring leap of "faith," without even knowing the immediate result of the step in details. This is the kind of step that you would want to take and you will resolve in your heart that "if I perish, I perish." If you refuse to step out of your comfort zone and do what scares you, then you are not ready to release your untapped potentials.

It is worthy to note that taking risks is not about being reckless in your actions or taking blind moves. It is about seeing opportunities in situations, calculating the possibilities involved, then daring it with some bold moves, even when you may not be too certain of the outcome. Remember when humans went to the near side of moon for the first time many years ago, none of the astronauts involved knew exactly what they expected to see there. In fact, no one had made it so far to that point before that time, so they were uncertain about the outcome, but still they took the journey, and they become legends. Neil Armstrong, which was the crew captain, and who became the first man to step feet on the moon, made name for himself because they decided to take the required risks.
When you feel like you are too comfortable at a spot, then know that it is a trap. This is because it may prevent you from launching further into the infinite possibilities in life. As a matter of fact, you need to move from your place of comfort in order to maximise your true potentials. It is true that fear and uncertainty may arise, but it should not stop you from taking the risk. You either take risks willingly or you will be faced with a far bigger and tougher risk - that is the risk of not taking a risk. This is why it is said that "not taking risk is a bigger risk than taking risk itself." You may not know if you will succeed at a step, but if you do not take it, then you already know that you have failed at it. When taking steps, do not focus on what could go wrong but on the positive result that you hope to get.

The story of Nelson Mandela points out to the infinite possibilities in taking risks. He took a risk at a point where a lot of people felt it was insane to do so. During the period of peak apartheid in South African, he sacrificed his freedom in his fight against apartheid. This led to him being locked up for 27years, yet it did not stop his voice from being heard. He chose to keep taking daring steps even at the risk of his freedom and his life. At the end, he achieved his dream and apartheid fell, and he became a very renowned president of South Africa. If he had not taken the risk, he would not have achieved all these.
One thing about taking risks is that it positions you for growth, makes you to learn new things, and stretches you beyond your limit. Even if you did not get the expected result from the risk, you must have gained valuable experience that would help you to prepare well to achieve success in the future. Just to let you know, there is no need to fear failure when taking risks, after all, failure is not an end, but can also be part of the journey to greatness. When you dare to take risks without the fear of failure, you will become outstanding with the kind of result that you command.
If you have to achieve something great, then you do not have to "play safe." You need to do something unconventional, something that scares you, something no one has done, something different, or at least doing something in a uniquely different way. In order to rise above the average, or to get the result that is different from what you have been getting before, then be ready to develop the courage to take some calculated risks.
