So I caught this movie the other day alone in the theaters.
Oh that's right, I enjoy watching my movies alone. No fussy. No hassle and no waiting for someone who's usually late. Who shows up for a movie late?! Geez.
Anyway this gem by Guillermo del Toro is about a mute lady who works as a cleaning lady at a secret, underground facility.
Then one day, she finds out about their secret 'asset', which is an underwater creature from an unknown part of the world!
And... the relationship between develops.
Sounds rather romantic with a mix of sci-fi right?
It definitely is.
It's this combination of unlikely elements that is spread throughout the world in the film: The Cold War era coupled with problems we see today, such as racism, homosexuality, the darkness in humanity, love and yeah, that creature.
The style of the film reminds me of a Disney film, where the feelings, messages and emotions of each character are portrayed poetically, albeit of mature themes:
A gay guy who lost his job and in love with a waiter.
A Russian scientist alone in America.
A handicapped lady silent in a noisy world.
And again, the creature in a human world.
Then we see them talk, argue, sing, dance, paint to become the gods in their own world.
I personally feel the film got a little too cheesy near the end, but at the end of the day, it was well done.
If you're looking for a romance film that is another world and on another level altogether, this movie is for you.
You'll feel something deep within as you're taken on a journey in their respective worlds.
Verdict: 8/10
Did I mention that the movie got 12 Academy Award nominations including Best Film?
Hope you like this one @ezzy
Great film and review!
The creature looks a lot like Abe Sapiens from Hellboy, also by Del Toro.
