Annihilation - movie review

in #movie7 years ago

I watched the movie Annihilation yesterday and it was an exciting sci-fi. Spoilers are coming!

Start of the story

There is a biologist woman, called Lena. Lena works at the university, her field of research is cell fission.
She lost her husband, Kane a year ago. Kane was a soldier and he worked in a classified project. Lena is struggling with her grief.
One day his husband comes back to their house. Kane is very confused and he hardly talks. Later he starts to bleed, Lena calls 911. On their way to the hospital some black cars stops the ambulance and the soldiers kidnap both of them.

And the expedition begins…

Lena wakes up in a high security building and a psychologist visits her. The classified project is about a nature phenomenon, which looks pretty good but it is very dangerous. And it grows. They know that the source of this is the water tower in the national park.
The military is there for a year, it sent many volunteers into this phenomenon, but noone came back. Noone, but Lena's husband.
Lena applies to the next mission. She says that she owes her husband. Her application is accepted.

Lena's adventure

This phenomenon has a strange effect on the nature. We can see Lena's expedition group entering the phenomenon. And weird things start to happen. They forget the previous days. Different species cross each other. It is beautiful when it is about a flower, but quite scarry when it is an aligator with shark teeth. They find out that the phenomenon is about mutation and synthesis of different species (even humans).
During the expedition the members of the group dies one by one. At the end there is Lena at the water tower (the source of the phenomenon). There is only one more battle, the battle she has to fight with her own mutation.
We know from the first minutes that Lena will survive, so I can tell to you that she is the only one (and her husband) that came back from the phenomenon. And Lena even destroys it. We suppose everything will be alright from now.

The end

Of course, there is a cliffhanger at the end of the movie. As it is the first part of a serie (there will be two more movies), I was not surprired of the end. The movie gave only a few answers and many questions.

My opinion

  • There are some horror scenes n the middle of the movie. I think nowadays the horror scenes are rather funny than scary. I almost laughed at the serious attact of the mutants.
  • There were some very intimate scenes from the past of the couple. I think it wasn't needed. We could see them together in the bedroom, it seemed that they spent their marriage in that room. I didn't see any importance of these moments.
  • The actors were great. My personal favourite was the psychologist. And Lena is played by the talented Natalie Portman.
  • The movie was exciting in the beginning, but it became a bit boring when the expedition started. However, I am sure that I will watch the following Annihilation movies.
  • The phenomenon was very amazing. The movie had a cool graphical background. It was enjoyable to watch. As Lena says sometimes it was like a dream, sometimes it was like a nightmare.
