I have always like Will Smith's movies and the story plot are always interesting. Same goes with this movie, this was not a usual zombie movie.
Humans created a virus as treatment for virus but it goes horribly wrong and becomes viral. It turned almost all the population of the world in flesh eating animals.
The past is shown as cut scenes where it is shown how it happened and Will Smith was an army general back then.
In current time, he is spending his life searching for good, setting traps for night. These creatures come at night and he went into full security lockdown at night. His dog is still alive with him and usually helps him in his day hunt for food.
Things goes sideways when one day both of them are chasing their hunt and dog goes into dark building. He goes after the dog and we see their first encounter with zombies. Unfortunately dog, get bit by them and eventually turn into one.
He has to kill his dog by his own hands, left completely heart broken. Seeking revenge, he commits a mistake by going at night and tries to the ones in that building.
His vehicle gets stuck but he is miraculously saved by another car coming at night. In morning, he finds another woman who listened to her radio call for help and came to save her. Later that night, they are attacked again and ending was really emotional. Will gave his life to give the woman cure for this disease, dying as a legend.
