A Quiet Place - Movie Review

Horror movie genre directors tried everything in their movies. Weird creatures, zombies, vampires, aliens etc. Now, nothing is scary if it is visually new. Meaning, if you created yet another CGI creature, you are not going to scare many horror genre fans. Because every moviegoer expect something different and that expectation is killing that genre. Nothing different is new. Also, all that screams and sound effects are not effective enough anymore. Scary movie genre has to offer more than CGI effects and screams.

Family

So, what scars us more than visual creatures and sound effects? The answer is the loss of our family members and loved ones. A Quiet Place tells the story of a family, that try to survive, far away from the rest of the world. They do everything to stay alive and not lose each other.

When the mother (Emily Blunt) sees existential treat about her children, she tells her husband (John Krasinski)“Who are we if we can't protect them?”. That question underlines the importance of the family and what they are willing to do in order to keep it together.

A Quiet Place is more about family than a cheap horror. It is a creepy movie but you will be worried about what family do and how they survive than what creatures do.

Silence

Sound first used in The Jass Singer movie in 1927. Many directors and screenwriters objected that move. They thought sound will reduce advanced cinematography and visual storytelling to a simple dialog. Many agreed to that idea even decades later. Those who agree tried to use less dialog in their movies. But sound and dialog are long in movies and there are less and fewer silence movies around.

Silence has a different kind of meaning in A Quiet Place. The story requires that kind of silence. While they have to be silent, we pay more and more attention to watch everything they do very closely because of the absence of dialog.

Interesting Information About the Cast

Emily Blunt is a great actress. She reflects the story and persona very nicely. I really enjoy watching her performance.

A Quiet Place's director John Krasinski is also co-writer of the screenplay and he is also the real-life husband of Elimy Blunt.

Deaf girl Millicent Simmonds is deaf in real life too.

Should You Watch It?

Yes, absolutely. This movie is not trying to scare you as much as possible. I personally don't like that kind of movies because these kind of movies are not scary when you lower the volume. A Quiet Place is a great story about a family. I enjoyed it a lot and I believe you will too.
