Possibly one my most favorite films of 2017, Villeneuve did not disappoint a 35 year long wait for this sci-fi classic's sequel.
It stayed true to the elements that made the first movie successful with the right amount balance for parallels and originality. The art style and general aesthetic of the movie felt really immersive and the CGI is just simply stunning. The amount of detail that went to outfits, environment, and graphics was top-notch. If I haven't stressed it enough, this movie is an eye-candy! Zimmer's score is well balanced and really effective, the transition from silence to tension is beautifully seamless and adds a whole other layer of depth to the viewing experience.
Gosling's generally stoic demeanor (which is present in most of his movies) complemented the film's emotional character and added depth to the atmosphere that the movie was trying to create. Luv, played by Sylvia Hoeks, was a perfect contrast from Gosling's character, K, showing complexity and volatility.
The movie was longer than I would have preferred when some scenes could've been made shorter, the pacing was arguably slow perhaps because it had to partly establish its own plot so that it doesn't have to rely so much on what happened 35 years ago. The story itself is complex but well explained with the right amount of unpredictability.
Overall Blade Runner is a worthy heir of a well loved cult classic that added depth to the story of its predecessor. Its story was good enough to stand on its own but reminiscing from 1982 would help out a lot.
I'll give this one a 9/10 and would seriously recommend it to everyone.
I'm not a movie person, but I'm definitely trying to watch more this 2018! I've heard of Blade Runner 2049 but I never actually got to watching it. Reading your review makes me want to watch it as soon as I can! With such a high rating, I might regret not seeing this sooner.
Thanks for this, and I look forward to your next posts!
Glad to hear that you're upping your movie watching this year, if you end up liking Blade Runner 2049 try watching the 1982 one, it's a bit uneasy to the eyes as it is older but you might enjoy it nonetheless.
Great review! I was browsing through a movie app last time and I came across this film. By the way you describe it, it surely looks like a good one to watch. Will definitely watch it next time.
P.S.
Thank you for not dropping a spoiler
