The TV series that have been able to offer original ideas that can make them unforgettable are counted on the fingers of one hand.
We remember Lost and very few others to make it short.
But what is generalist TV?

Ricordiamo Lost e pochissime altre per farla breve.
Ma cosa si intende per tv generalista?
Per essere molto schematici potremmo dire che una tv è da intendersi generalista quando non appartiene alla categoria nella quale includiamo le emittenti cable (HBO, Showtime, FX, AMC ecc) e le piattaforme streaming (Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, Disney + ecc).
A livello di contenuti i canali generalisti sono soggetti a maggiori restrizioni. Devono, infatti, tenere fede a serratissime regole su nudo, violenza, sangue, parità di genere, parità razziale e cosi via.
Ovvio che per prodotti di fantasia e creatività come gli show televisivi questi paletti possono rappresentare un muro insormontabile.
E cosi sulle tv generaliste è difficile tenere alta la qualità e l'originalità dei propri prodotti. Spesso ci si rifugia in serie procedurali, seppur di notevole fattura, molto spesso crime (CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds ecc) o in medical drama (Grey's Anatomy, Dr. House, The Good Doctor ecc) o in reboot più o meno riusciti di serie vecchie e stravecchie (Magnum PI, MacGiver e cosi via).
In America sono 5 le principali emittenti generaliste (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX e CW), ognuna con una propria particolarità.
Nel tempo esse hanno perso smalto e importanza proprio a causa dell'avvento delle piattaforme streaming e del proliferarsi delle emittenti via cavo, che maggiori investimenti hanno saputo offrire e soprattuto maggiore libertà di espressione agli autori.
In questo quadro ha sorpreso vedere come su FOX all'alba della seconda decade del nuovo millennio si siano affidati ad una mente geniale come quella di Jonhatan Nolan per ideare una serie tv che parlasse di spionaggio digitale, intelligenza artificiale e di come i nostri dati possano essere oggetto di manipolazioni e ingerenze dall'alto.
Nacque cosi quel mai troppo compreso gioiello chiamato Person of Interest.
La mente dietro l'operazione è quella del meno conosciuto dei fratelli Nolan che pure ha firmato praticamente tutte le sceneggiature dei film del fratello Christopher, dalla trilogia del cavaliere oscuro sino ad Inception.
Non un nome qualunque ed un autore che oggi è prepotentemente salito alla ribalta per un altra perla del piccolo schermo: Westworld.
Con Person of Interest è riuscito a precorrere i tempi. Ricordate il caso Snowden, il caso Cambridge Analytica e tutto quello che hanno scaturito?
Bene.
La serie aveva anticipato tutto.
Incredibile ma vero.
Nonostante dei protagonisti eccezionali, interpretati divinamente e sviluppati ancor meglio, la vera protagonista della serie è una macchina che verrà chiamata appunto The Machine.
Una super intelligenza artificiale capace di prevenire piccoli delitti ed eventi violenti.
Il magnate Harold Finch, interpretato da un favoloso Benjamin Linus, si servirà della macchina per metterla a disposizione del bene comune, in una New York caotica, corrotta, sporca e proiettata nel futuro. Per attuare i consigli della veggente macchina assolderà un ex agente della CIA creduto morto, un John Reese interpretato da un perfetto Jim Caviezel.
Ben presto la squadra si allargherà ed i protagonisti della serie saranno sempre più numerosi ma è da questa coppia che arriveranno tutte le sorprese, le gag, i drammi, le emozioni che la serie ha saputo offrire.
Person of Interest ha saputo essere un mix fra il procedurale ed il prestige Drama, sapendo essere verticale ed orizzontale contemporaneamente.
Numerosi sono stati i casi verticali esauritisi nel giro di una singola puntata, ma mai la serie ha ceduto il passo alla sola verticalità riuscendo ad aggiungere, episodio dopo episodio, elementi cumulativi di una trama orizzontale lunga 5 stagioni.
Una trama che è decollata anche grazie a personaggi superbi come Root, l'agente Carter, l'agente Fusco e l'agente Shaw, tutti parimenti importanti ai fini della trama principale e tutti coinvolti in quella che ben presto diventerà una guerra fra il bene il male.
Perché Person of Interest è stata soprattutto una serie filosofica dove quasi ad ogni puntata ci si interrogava, insieme allo spettatore, su quale fosse il bene e quale fosse il male, su cosa fosse giusto e cosa non lo fosse.
Una serie futuristica più che contemporanea e per questo universale e senza confini.
Proprio quei confini, soprattutto morali, che la serie, attraverso i suoi personaggi, ha provato continuamente a definire, alzando anno dopo anno l'asticella fino a diventare una sorta di vademecum per studiosi dell'umanità tutta.
Person of Interest non può essere dimenticata.
E' un diamante troppo prezioso che va condiviso proprio con quell'umanità che i nostri eroi hanno continuamente provato a salvare e valorizzare.
