Hey Steemit! I had planned to write up a review of Suicide Squad for the community, so after going out to the premiere last night, here we are! I hope you guys enjoy ― well-done movie reviews are useful for those who want a second input on a movie before spending money to head to the theater, and that's what I'm trying to achieve here. Suicide Squad
Characters ― 4/5
The characters are definitely what make this movie. Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn steals the show all on her own ― she absolutely NAILED the performance and was one of the most enjoyable parts of it all. The Joker himself also amazed me; his sheer insanity came across very well and the brief amount of screentime he had immediately made me want to see much more of him. While nothing in particular sticks out about Deadshot, ― aside from his sharpshooting skills... ― I thoroughly enjoyed his story and screentime as well. El Diablo was an interesting character in his own right, acting as the voice of reason and having the only backstory that made me sympathize. Amanda Waller was memorable for her ruthlessness, as some may expect from a government agent of that level. Katana's story was mildly interesting, and Killer Croc had some funny lines later on (although nothing comparable to Harley Quinn's actions throughout the movie). Unfortunately, none of the other characters really caught my attention.
Story ― 2.5/5
Suicide Squad's story suffers from a bit of rushed development. As we're introduced to the characters, it's not clear what the story will be, but then it quickly changes course to creating a threat that the Suicide Squad need to stop. The transition isn't done very well, and leaves you wondering "So that's what the rest of the movie's gonna be about?" In addition, it tried to add some sense of depth to what's going on, but wasn't able to elicit the required emotions. Remember when I said that "none of the other characters really caught my attention"? Well, that's half-true. The Enchantress as a character wasn't of much interest to me, but where she came from ― who she was ― her goals and her reasoning behind them ― was lightly intriguing. Overall, the story is certainly quite shallow, but not in a bad way ― it's enjoyable, which is what it seemed like it set out to do from the get-go. And that goal was accomplished superbly.
Conclusion ― 7/10
I went into this movie as a casual superhero fan and knowing it would be raw action and insanity ― and I wasn't disappointed on that end. Joker was fantastic, Harley Quinn stole the show every time, and a sequel has already been confirmed!? From Wikipedia:
In March 2016, it was announced that Warner Bros. would bring Ayer and Smith back for a sequel, to be shot in 2017 after the pair completed filming another project, Bright, in 2016.[108][109] The following month, Ayer expressed an interest in making the sequel R-rated.[110] Fukuhara has stated that she wants to explore Katana's backstory in the sequel.[111]
I've heard rumors that production was rushed, many scenes were cut, and there was high tension during filming ― some of that was already confirmed, while other parts are certainly believable. I've also noticed some reviewers nitpicking the most irrelevant of dialogue to complain about, which, as I read the reviews right before I went to watch it, didn't elicit the same distaste whatsoever that it seemed to have done for that person. When I watched Suicide Squad, its shortcomings didn't detract from the enjoyment of the movie to me, because that's how the movie was built to be ― enjoyable. It didn't try too hard in the feels department, it did what it did (action & insanity) really well, and watching it as a lighthearted movie ― in a, dark, sort of way... ― made it overall worth going to see.

Cheers. I'm gonna watch it either way :P
