The Star Wars That Might Have Been

in #movies7 years ago (edited)

It's no secret that I'm a Star Wars fan. The Last Jedi did not do Luke Skywalker justice. Love it or hate it, I think we can agree that Luke's fate left a lot to be desired. As if trying to murder his nephew wasn't out of character enough, he then hides away on an island while the galaxy burns around him and the people he cares about die. That is not a hero folks, that is a selfish coward, which love or hate Luke he most definitely was not. It is times like this I'm glad we have EU Luke(I don't care what Disney says, it still matters to me). Even if it's not canon anymore it shows you a Luke that could have been, a young hero who struggled against the Empire, fought the Warlords, faced down the Yuuzhan Vong, trained a new generation of Jedi to protect the Republic, and when the need arose he faced down his fallen students. That is the Luke I want to remember, not whatever that thing was in The Last Jedi.

I'll admit I was bitter, but I was willing to suffer in silence until I heard the reason(alleged but from a reliable source) that Colin Trevorrow was fired from Episode Nine. He wanted to keep Luke alive. He thought that Luke's departure was too quick and completely out of character. He also wanted Snoke to stay alive, to give him a backstory worthy of a main antagonist. He wanted this to be Luke's last great adventure before passing the torch completely to Rey and walking off into the sunset. Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy(who I am convinced at this point hates Star Wars) would not allow it, and when Colin protested they kicked him to the curb. The same thing happened to Lord and Miller when they tried to get a little creative with the Han Solo movie. From all accounts Rian and Kathy were adamant that Luke had to die. I have a theory as to why this is. Mark Hamill has not been shy about voicing his opinion about these new movies i.e. that they are mainly cash grabs, which lets be honest they are. He also made no secret that he disagreed with everything Rian had done with the character, in public no less which is sure to rouse the anger of the mouse. I think that they just didn't want to deal with Mark anymore so they killed off Luke. So in other words they let a personal problem shit all over Star Wars, which as mentioned above I think Kathleen Kennedy is fine with.

I can forgive and have a lot of shit when it comes to Star Wars, but this is just too far. I want to say to Colin Trevorrow if the information I am going on is true, thank you, thank you for standing up for the fans and refusing to make a movie that went against your (and I think many people's) vision of Luke and Star Wars. If Hollywood had more directors like you we might get more than one or two good movies a year. I hope Jar Jar Abrams and Rian Johnson are happy with themselves, for people who claim to be a Star Wars fans they have done a good job so far of completely sucking the life and spark from the franchise.

Thank you for reading and please join me in a moment of silence for the Luke that could have been. I'll leave you with a classic clip that makes the Last Jedi even harder to swallow.

Good post, I'll admit I was in it at Force Awakens and Rogue one, albeit separate from the saga was excellent as well. They lost me at the Last Jedi. I am not to the point where I will stop seeing the movies but if it keeps going like this....eh. I feel like SOLO is doomed to fail.

Спасибо за чтение. I think that is right, I meant to say thank you for reading in case anything was lost in translation.
