Movies Are For Entertainment

No escaping it, I’m a huge fan of movies. All movies.
I’ll basically watch any movie. But the worst habit I have, is that once I’ve started it I have to finish it. Even if it is bad or if I joined half way through; I need to see how it plays out. Let me tell you, that has lead me to some pretty horrific film viewing!

Below are just some of my favorite in no particular order.
I’ve got a pretty eclectic pattern as I’m sure you will see. As a film school kid, I know I should be looking for camera angles and use of colors, but I’m a fan of watching a movie because it takes me to a completely different place and or because it entertains me. Everything else is just gravy.

Halloween (John Carpenter) – This is the quintessential slasher film. A masked killer stalks a young teenager on Halloween night. This is my favorite movie of all time.

Gentleman Prefer Blondes – Nobody does gold digger quite like Marylin Monroe.

Lorelei Lee: Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn't marry a girl just because she's pretty, but my goodness, doesn't it help?

Waitress – An abused wife finds out she’s pregnant and ends up having an affair with her doctor.

Kingsman: The Secret Service– It’s hokey and a bit violent, but I enjoyed every minute of it. A modern day play on spy films.

Revolutionary Road – A dark story about a husband and wife trying to find their way in their own marriage.

April Wheeler: Tell me the truth, Frank, remember that? We used to live by it. And you know what's so good about the truth? Everyone knows what it is however long they've lived without it. No one forgets the truth, Frank, they just get better at lying.

Devil’s Rejects – This is not for the faint of heart. It’s Rob Zombie at his goriest. This movie made me stay up late just to watch cartoons so I could help get out some of the images it left me with.

Drive – A story about a getaway driver. Dark and gruesome.

Princess Bride – I think every girl that grew up in the 80’s has to say this is one of her favorites. No one is better than Wesley.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the cartoon) – This movie encapsulates all that is the holiday for me. And bonus fact, the guy that plays Tony the Tiger is the voice of the Grinch.

Singer: You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch / You're a nasty, wasty skunk / Your heart is full of unwashed socks, your soul is full of gunk / Mr. Gri-inch / The three words that best describe you are as follows, and I quote: Stink, stank, stunk!

My Cousin Vinny – Perhaps this is the most quoteable movie on my list (right behind Princess Bride).

First Wives Club – I saw this movie when it first came out in the theater with my friend’s mom who was going through a divorce at the time. I didn’t understand then why she cried, but I do now.

Superstar – This movie is so wrong that it makes me laugh every time. One of the best SNL character’s made into a full length movie.

Lawless – A friend of mine actually worked on this film and told me that I should see it after she read the script. I was not disappointed. A movie about bootlegging and family.

Forrest Bondurant: It is not the violence that sets men apart, alright, it is the distance that he is prepared to go.

Fear – One of my first ‘adult’ movie’s that made me feel so grown up when we saw it. A cautionary tale about dating.

The Dressmaker – A girl goes back to her hometown to figure out her past and prove she made something of herself. This movie has amazing costumes.

Wet Hot American Summer – I worked for years as a camp counselor. If you’ve ever been to camp or worked at a camp, this is for you.

Caped Boy: Excuse me, ladies. You may remember me as the guy who came to dinner a few weeks ago with underwear on my head. My name is Keith Stat from Millburn, New Jersey. State bird, the mosquito. And as you may have heard, I am recently a crowned class B dungeon master. So if any of you would like to play D&D today, please speak now or forever hold your peace.

To me these movie’s are can’t miss. I’d watch them any time at any point of the film. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these. How many of them have you seen?
