In general, when a film has been well filmed, it often quickly becomes a focus of attention, taking several prizes or raising a lot at the box office.
However there are some films that, despite their quality, fail to have the recognition necessary to be broadcast and remembered by a lot of people and lost in time.
That is why with this post I seek to give a little recognition to those films that have been discreetly over the years.
Coherence (James Ward Byrkit/2013)
Coherence is an American science fiction thriller film directed by James Ward Byrkit in his directorial debut. The film had its world debut on September 19, 2013 at the Austin Fantastic Fest and stars Emily Baldoni as a woman who must deal with strange occurrences following a comet sighting.
The film involves eight people at a dinner party. During their dinner, there is a comet that is passing over them. This causes their house and the occupants to intertwine with multiple such houses and occupants from other realities. There is a dark zone in between the realities. When someone passes through the dark zone, they leave their reality and enter another reality at random. The one person which the movie constantly follows is Emily (referred as Emily Prime here after).
Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson/2009
Fantastic Mr. Fox is a 2009 American stop-motion animated comedy film based on Roald Dahl's children's novel of the same name. The film is about a fox who steals food each night from three mean and wealthy farmers. They are fed up with Mr. Fox's theft and try to kill him, so they dig their way into the foxes' home, but the animals are able to outwit the farmers and live underground.
Faithful to his style, Wes Anderson takes his planes similar to paintings to the animation, in a film that squander work and dedication that screams for recognition.
Jägten/The Hunt (Thomas Vinterberg/2012)
The Hunt (Danish: Jagten) is a 2012 Danish drama film directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Mads Mikkelsen. The story is set in a small Danish village around Christmas, and follows a man who becomes the target of mass hysteria after being wrongly accused of sexually abusing a child in his kindergarten class.
Films from Europe often go unnoticed among the great amount of material of the North American industry, in the case of the Danish The Hunt (Jägten in its original language) has not been the exception
Prisoners (Denis Villeneuve/2013)
Prisoners is a 2013 American thriller film directed by Denis Villeneuve from a screenplay written by Aaron Guzikowski. The film has an ensemble cast including Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo and Paul Dano
The plot focuses on the abduction of two young girls in Pennsylvania and the subsequent search for the suspected abductor by the police. After police arrest a young suspect and release him, the father of one of the missing girls kidnaps the suspect to interrogate and torture him. The film was a financial success and critical reviews were largely positive. At the 86th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Cinematography.
This film is a true class of how to make suspense films, with convincing performances and a dark tone, it manages to become a feature film that lovers of the genre will enjoy every second.
The Man from Earth (Richard Schenkman/2007)
The Man from Earth is a 2007 American drama science fiction film written by Jerome Bixby and directed by Richard Schenkman. It stars David Lee Smith as John Oldman, the protagonist. The screenplay was conceived by Jerome Bixby in the early 1960s and completed on his deathbed in April 1998.[2] The film gained recognition in part for being widely distributed through Internet peer-to-peer networks, which raised its profile. The film was later adapted by Schenkman into a stage play of the same name.
The plot focuses on John Oldman, a departing university professor, who claims to be a Cro-Magnon (or Magdalenian caveman) who has secretly survived for more than 14,000 years. The entire film is set in and around Oldman's house during his farewell party and is composed almost entirely of dialogue. The plot advances through intellectual arguments between Oldman and his fellow faculty members.
