A few days ago was my first anniversary of being on this platform, which has nothing to do with the subject of this article, but I bring that up because it was around that time when I wrote in my blog a post titled "The Road to Avengers: Infinity War. A complete guide through the MCU to be prepared!!!", in which I tried to provide a guide as comprehensible as possible of the most important events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) up to that moment, chronologically and trying to connect all the dots, so that anyone could review the facts and remember how all the characters’ paths were intertwined.
It wasn't an easy task to gather and summarize the key moments of 18 films, but it wasn't difficult for me either because my love for this franchise and characters made it a very pleasant experience. Now we are facing a situation similar to last year, because the follow-up of the story of the Avengers, Avengers: Endgame, has been released on the big screen (at the time this article is been written) and I wish to once again offer my readers the opportunity to catch up so they are ready for the premiere of the film.
I wanted to write an update of my old post, adding different images and changing some words to avoid any automatic plagiarism warning of my own article (yes, you can be accused of plagiarizing yourself), also including the events that occurred in Infinity War, Ant -man and the Wasp and the most recent Captain Marvel. But after reading it and remembering the hours and hours of effort I dedicated to it, I realized that I didn't have so much time and didn't want to repeat myself even if the result was a masterpiece hahaha. Therefore, as part of this necessary recount, I invite you to read that post and the subsequent review I made for Infinity War before you continue to read this one.
In those two articles I summarize almost everything you need to know to be prepared to watch Avengers: Endgame. Because my blog was very new at that time, I probably did not have enough reach to share it with more people, I hope my reach is a little bit bigger now and they can be useful to you. However, there is more information to add.
Contrary to what was initially believed, S.H.I.E.L.D. had contact with other heroes before the formation of the Avengers. It is known for example that the original Ant-man and the Wasp (Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne) worked for this organization until they lost Janet in the late 80s when she shrank more than the allowed safe levels in order to disable a missile that would end many innocent lives. The result was that she entered the quantum realm from which apparently there was no return.
Years later, during the first adventure of Scott Lang as the new Ant-man, he was able to shrink more than the allowed safe levels and return unharmed, which revived in Hank Pym and his daughter Hope Van Dyne the hope of finding and rescuing Janet. After a lot of effort and numerous setbacks they were able to access the quantum realm and bring the original Wasp back.
But the joy of the reunion didn't last long. Some time later while they were doing a few experiments that required Scott to enter the quantum realm again, the events of Infinity War were happening and the snapping of Thanos's fingers, who had his gauntlet armed with all the infinity stones, made disappear the half of all living beings, including Hank, Janet and Hope, who became dust. So Scott Lang was allegedly trapped in the quantum realm without knowing anything of what had happened in the universe.
Even though S.H.I.E.L.D. had worked with heroes in the past and knew of the existence and activities of Captain America during the Second World War, the idea of forming a team of extraordinary people as the Earth's first line of defense against extraterrestrial threats arose in the 90s, when a younger two eyed Nick Fury and his then-rookie partner Phillip Coulson, had an encounter with Vers, a supposed alien with amazing powers.
Vers belonged to an elite group of warriors, part of the the Kree army, who were in an endless war with the Skrull race. Years before that a Kree scientist named Mar-vell fled the war and took refuge on Earth where she had access to the Tesseract and later conducted experiments to create technology for peaceful purposes. But the Kree forces found and attacked her, causing her death and an accident that gave terrestrial pilot Carol Danvers powers from the Tesseract. The Kree took Carol who got amnesia after the incident and make her believe she was one of them, giving her the name Vers.
In the aftermath of a battle against the Skrulls Carol was stranded on Earth where assisted by Nick Fury and an old friend from her past discovered her true identity, that the Kree were not as good as she believed and that not all the Skrulls were bad. After facing the Kree and knowing the extent of her powers, she leaved Earth to help those in need in remote areas of the universe and gave Nick Fury a device to communicate with her in case of emergency.
This experience inspired Fury to draft his project to form a team of heroes and when observing a photo from Carol Danvers’ files he noticed that her nickname in the air force was "The Avenger" so he named his initiative after her. Fury's vision, The Avengers, became Earth's mightiest heroes, saving it several times, until the arrival of Thanos who they couldn't stop. Many of our favorite characters vanished in the snap, including Nick Fury, who used the strength and time he had left to finally ask Carol Danvers for help with the device she handed him.
After such a dramatic ending as Infinity Wars had, the expectation about Avengers: Endgame is even higher than last year's, and I really don't think we're going to be disappointed. At least now you don't have any excuse to feel confused at the theater...
