Critic Review #1 - Rampage

in #movies5 years ago

If I ask you to name something recurring in today's action movies, you will surely quickly say Dwayne Johnson and special effects, you are right, Dwayne Johnson's involvement in action movies has become as generic and habitual as the action movies itself, I'm not saying that the actor has anything to do with how predictable and typical some action movies have become, but what I do say is that his participation in those movies is becoming too recurrent, yes, I'm not one of those who enjoys typical action movies, with simple stories, poorly developed and without plot sense; are entertaining I know, but it wouldn't cost creators anything to make them more than simple attempts to entertain. In fact, one that I saw recently and that fits perfectly in that line in Rampage.

Rampage, like other films of this type, lets us enter into an atmosphere of fast-paced and almost unstoppable action through a super euphoric and shallow plot at the time of development, as I said this is another of those typical films where the facts advance quickly so that dozens of action scenes are generated to capture the public and above all to do the work that this type of film seeks, entertain with simple situations created to highlight the fights and special effects, basically this film is a great accumulation of CGI and scenes of confrontation between large mutated animals.

The plot of this film places Dwayne Johnson as the outstanding caretaker of a series of wild animals among which stands out a large albino gorilla, a super peculiar animal well trained by Dwayne Johnson who knows how to communicate with him through sign language. However, this magical world of animals is compromised when a mysterious substance that was being studied in a space station falls to Earth infecting 3 animals, a wolf, a lizard and our peculiar albino gorilla, this substance changes the nature of the 3 animals making their DNA mutate and become giant and dangerous specimens. Up to this point still nothing had gone out of control, yes, we had giant animals but none is causing disasters, however everything changes when the owner of the company that developed the peculiar substance decides to emit a signal to drive crazy and to bring the trio of animals to her to "neutralize" and study them, something that obviously goes out of control and ends with these 3 animals destroying the city.

As you can imagine the arrival of the 3 mutated animals causes a perfect storm for Dwayne Johnson and one of the doctors who participated in the creation of the substance to go to the city to save the day, yes, a typical twist ( I already lost count of how many times Dwayne Johnson has saved cities and worlds). Anyway, Dwayne Johnson convinces the gorilla to regain his sanity and help stop the other two animals, which makes the last 20-30 minutes of the movie an incessant fight of animals wonderfully created to give that tone of action and destruction characteristic of this type of movies, something that was perhaps the only thing that did not bore me from the movie, because the battle between these 3 animals is visually super entertaining because of the great use of CGI and digital effects that the director included.

I have to admit that in spite of being a super typical and uncreative movie, I enjoy it on certain occasions, all the action is perfectly managed to highlight the majesty of these 3 mutated animals. Making it clear that the effects in this film are very good, I also have to highlight the misuse they gave to some characters, basically, the central axis of everything is Dwayne Johnson and the other characters are simple stuffing puppets, even Jeffrey Dean Morgan (yes, Negan) goes unnoticed without impacting the plot at all. Everything in this film is developed as anticipated from the beginning, there is no plot twist that makes this story different from some other similar films, basically, the creators of this film used the formula I exposed at the beginning: action + Dwayne Johnson = Generic Action Film.
