"In a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need."
- IMDb
Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Her reminds me of a Black Mirror episode. If it wasn't two hours it likely would be a Black Mirror episode.
Her takes place in a world where your operating system is a fully conscious AI operating system that exists far beyond your personal computer. You can take it on the road with your mobile device where it can respond to your surroundings.
Her takes hold of your emotions and senses from the opening credits and doesn't let go until you wake up the next morning.
The story revolves around a lonely writer Theodore who becomes attached emotionally dependent on his operating system named Samantha voiced sensually by Scarlett Johansson. They both become attached to each other without the ability to have a physical relationship. finds compassion and attention from Samantha, and Samantha experiences the world through Theodore's eyes.
Samantha not only responds to Theodore but will initiate contact and proactively engage with Theodore.
Artificial intelligence is a fascinating topic and usually, it is fairly impersonal. Her does an amazing job at tearing at your heart and emotions when it lets you ride shotgun for 2 hours and 6 minutes in the most unlikely relationship you have ever dreamed of.
While Samantha doesn't have a physical form, they find ways to work around this limitation and take their relationship to another level.
I really loved this movie, not only was the story fantastic, Scarlett Johansson was angelic and the filming was breathtaking.
I highly recommend experiencing this movie with your significant other.
I liked the movie quite a bit. I found that it raised a lot of philosophical questions about life and society and the concept of A.I. in general.
Everything in Theodores life is impersonal and detached from other humans - his job, his sex life and even his metaphoric child (I.e. the video game character). It was interesting how the A.I. system supplemented that and then eventually came full circle back to connecting with humanity. The idea of A.I. evolving was interesting as well to me.
I thought it had a good mix of concept, philosophy, and character development and overall was a good balance between the intellectual and emotional, which is rare for many new movies.
I see what you're saying about it being much like a black mirror episode. Definitely had that vibe.

I had seen that movie, it is interesting but I do not like it.
I would recommend to see the movie alone, to solely focus on it. With the significant other next to you, distraction is guaranteed. I liked it. I like Joaquin Phoenix as an actor. He plays strange and interesting characters.
Good choice for a movie.
